BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants

The BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants are now open for applications. Funds are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences. These awards, up to £10,000 in value and tenable for up to 24 months, are provided to cover the cost of the expenses arising from a defined research project.

UKIERI Call for Research Proposals 2016

The UK India Education Research Initiative, in collaboration with the Indian Department for Science and Technology and the Indian University Grants Commission, invites applications for its calls for research proposals under the e-partnership and research incubation strand.

The calls are for funding in the arts, humanities and sciences key priority areas:

  • Climate Research
  • Data Science
  • Human Health
  • Material Science
  • Marine Sciences

Awards range from £100,000 to £200,000 for three years per project.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 5 October 2016.

In addition, UUKi will be holding a pre-submission workshop at Woburn House on from 10.00 – 12.00 Monday 26 September 2016. The workshop will provide attendees with an introduction and overview of UKIERI, which will focus on strand three, e-partnership and research incubation and an opportunity to pose questions on the open calls for research funding.

British Academy Special Funds

In September 2016 the British Academy will be inviting applications for a selection of Special Funds, the majority of which are administered through the BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants scheme. Available funds range from £1,000 – £10,000. Awards are tenable for up to 24 months. The deadline for applications is the 12th October 2016.

Ancient Persia Fund

For the study of Iranian or Central Asian studies in the pre-Islamic period.

Elisabeth Barker Fund

For studies in recent European history, particularly the history of Central and Eastern Europe. An application to this fund may be combined with an application for a small research grant for other costs, up to a total of £7,500.

Sir Ernest Cassel Educational Trust Fund

For travel costs relating to a research project (particularly aimed at recent postdoctoral scholars).

44th International Congress of Americanists Fund

For travel costs relating to Latin American studies.

Elie Kedourie Memorial Fund

For the study of Middle Eastern and Modern European History, and the History of Political Thought.

Honor Frost Foundation

To promote the advancement and research of marine and maritime archaeology.

Journal of Moral Education Trust

Research in the fields of moral education, moral psychology, moral philosophy and ethics, Civics and citizenship education and subjects bearing on our understanding of how human beings engage or disengage with moral life.

Neil Ker Memorial Fund

For the study of Western medieval manuscripts. More details on the Neil Ker Memorial Fund can be found here.

Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain

Research in philosophy brought to bear on educational questions and issues.

Society for the Advancement of Management Studies

For the support of research in Management and Business Studies.

Stein-Arnold Exploration Fund

For research on the antiquities, historical geography, early history, or arts of India, China, and Iran, including Central Asia. More details on the Stein-Arnold Exploration Fund can be found here.

Sino-British Fellowship Trust

For individual or co-operative research projects in Britain or China.

British Accounting and Finance Association

Royal Society Theo Murphy blue skies award

This supports innovative research that will lead to preliminary or proof of concept data; fundamental research in new and emerging areas; and original and bold research that may lack a sufficient evidence base in the literature.

Gerda Henkel Foundation Research Project Grants

These support research projects in the historical humanities, particularly within the fields of archaeology, art history, historical Islamic studies, history, history of law, history of science, prehistory and early history.

Osteology Foundation Research Grants

These support research on oral and maxillofacial tissue regeneration. Topics may include: bone and soft tissue biology – clinical aspects; local factors affecting oral tissue regeneration; systemic diseases with an impact on oral tissue regeneration; novel bone and soft tissue substitute materials; pharmacological aspects of oral tissue regeneration; and inflammatory conditions, such as periodontitis and peri-implants.

Ove Arup Foundation Smaller Project Grants

These support projects that are consistent with the foundation’s education purposes in the built environment.

Multiple Sclerosis Trust Multiple Sclerosis Therapists Education Fund

This enables therapists to meet the needs of people with MS by expanding their MS knowledge and clinical skills through attending academic courses, conferences, study days or masterclasses.

Being Human 2016: Second Call for Unfunded Activities

This year, the festival will return between 17-25 November with a programme of activities themed around ‘Hope & Fear’. The theme has been selected both for its capacity to speak to fundamental human traits and for its applicability across disciplinary boundaries in the humanities. Applicants are invited to respond creatively and in ways that probe the rich intellectual possibilities of the theme.

Humanities in Public: WORLD


‘Humanities in Public’ is the research showcase of the Faculty of Humanities, Languages and Social Science at Manchester Metropolitan University. Our aim is to introduce you to the research we do via a programme of topical events and activities that make you want to come join us and participate. The programme is open to absolutely everyone.

Our third grand challenge is WORLD.

The intention of this HiP strand is to examine just a few of the pressing questions that our existence in the WORLD confronts us with. Themed events will run from April to June 2016.

British Communism and Commitment Call for Papers

Bringing together academics from a wide range of disciplines and former party activists, this day school analyses the complexities of commitment in the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) over its 70 year history (1920-1991).

9 June 2016, People’s History Museum.

Researchers are invited to submit papers for this event of up to 20 minutes, on a broad range of Communist and Marxist topics.

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be emailed to by 1 April 2016.
